バーミキュライトは、天然に産出する鉱物（含水マグネシウムアルミニウムケイ酸塩）で、高温に加熱するとアコーディオンのような粒子に膨張します。園芸では、水分と栄養分を保持しつつ、ある程度の通気性を提供する培地成分として使用されます。パーライトとは異なり、バーミキュライトはより多くの水を保持し、適度な陽イオン交換容量（CEC）を持ち、一時的に栄養イオンを保持および放出できます。
主なポイント
- Retains 3–4 times more water than perlite — better for moisture-loving seedlings and cuttings
- Moderate CEC allows it to buffer and slowly release nutrients
- pH slightly alkaline (7.0–7.5) — can raise pH in acidic mixes
- Not suitable as a standalone hydroponic medium — too water-retentive for most systems
- Best uses: seed starting, propagation mixes, top layer over germinating seeds
- Often blended with perlite in propagation media (50:50) to balance moisture and aeration
