Clay Pebbles

Clay pebbles (also called hydroton, LECA β€” Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate, or clay balls) are small, porous balls made by firing clay in a rotary kiln. They are a popular inert hydroponic growing medium that provides excellent drainage, aeration, and physical support for plant roots.

Key Facts

  • Inert, pH-neutral, and chemically stable β€” do not break down over time
  • Excellent drainage prevents waterlogging; high porosity supports root oxygenation
  • Reusable after sterilisation β€” wash, soak in diluted hydrogen peroxide, and reuse
  • Used in net pots for NFT, DWC, Kratky, and media-bed systems
  • Lightweight relative to soil or gravel β€” ideal for stacked or vertical systems
  • Rinse thoroughly before first use to remove clay dust that can clog pumps
