Clay pebbles (also called hydroton, LECA β Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate, or clay balls) are small, porous balls made by firing clay in a rotary kiln. They are a popular inert hydroponic growing medium that provides excellent drainage, aeration, and physical support for plant roots.
Key Facts
- Inert, pH-neutral, and chemically stable β do not break down over time
- Excellent drainage prevents waterlogging; high porosity supports root oxygenation
- Reusable after sterilisation β wash, soak in diluted hydrogen peroxide, and reuse
- Used in net pots for NFT, DWC, Kratky, and media-bed systems
- Lightweight relative to soil or gravel β ideal for stacked or vertical systems
- Rinse thoroughly before first use to remove clay dust that can clog pumps
